RBY Projects awarded top honours at the 2016 Queensland Resource Sector Indigenous Awards

RBY Projects announced as the winner of the Exceptional Indigenous Business Award at the 2016 Queensland Resource Council Indigenous Awards. Nominated by QGC Limited, RBY Projects was recognised for being the largest 100 percent Indigenous owned and managed company providing contracting services to the gas sector with a strong focus on Indigenous Workers.

RBY Projects video features on the Prime Minister’s 2016 Closing the Gap Report issued by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. RBY Projects was highlighted as an example of the successes and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the progress being made towards Closing the Gap targets. RBY Projects announced as the winner of the Indigenous in Business Award at the annual Ethnic Business Awards held 6 November 2015 in Adelaide. The Managing Director of RBY Projects, Derek Flucker was recognised for creating a business model that aims to reduce the dependence on welfare in local communities, becoming the biggest Indigenous business in Queensland’s resource sector, employing more than a hundred people and tripling turnover in one year.

RBY Announced as a National Finalists in the 2015 Ethnic Business Awards in the Indigenous Business Category.

RBY was announced as one of four National finalists in the 2015 Ethnic Business Awards in the Indigenous in Business Category. The event will be televised live nationally on SBS on 6 November where the winner will be announced. The business awards have summarised RBY as follows: 

Inspired by the struggle of his grandfather – an Aboriginal World War I veteran – Derek was determined to achieve his dream of creating a business. Derek built his model on the reduction of welfare dependency by employing local Indigenous people in the resource sector. It soon became the largest Indigenous business in the resource industry in Queensland, employing more than 100 people, and almost tripling turnover within a year.

In the latest edition of Gas Today there is a special feature on Indigenous community engagement. Derek explains that the recent resource boom has been a boom for the industry and the Indigenous groups taking part in these projects. But the recent downturn has adversely affected Indigenous groups”.


In response to the slowdown, Derek challenges resource companies to develop business models that consider international and national best practice models.

Third Anniversary for RBY Projects and Origin Energy – June 2015

Coinciding with the release of Origin Energy’s first Reconciliation Action Plan in May 2015, RBY Projects and Origin Energy are celebrating three years of working together reports the Australian Oil and Gas Review.

Gas Today have released the Top 20 Australian Gas Leaders 2015 naming Derek Flucker as number four on the list. The Top 20 Australian Gas Leaders according to Gas Today include influential gas stalwarts and upcoming visionaries who have made a significant impact on the Australian Gas Industry. Derek Flucker was recognised for his contributions to Indigenous participation in the gas sector through RBY Projects Pty Ltd and his role as chairperson on Aboriginal Enterprises in Mining, Exploration and Energy (AEMEE).
